2019 Inova Orthopaedics Sports Medicine Summit

Fairfax, VA- May, 17, 2019– The Inova Sports Medicine Department held its 3rd Annual Sports Medicine Summit at the Inova Center for Personalized Health (ICPH). This conference, hosted by Dr. Robin West and Dr. Edward Chang, placed an emphasis on, “Emerging Techniques in Sports Medicine Surgery and Rehabilitation.” Experts from around the country shared their knowledge and experience with physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers and nurses in attendance. This year, more than 180 people attended the conference, a 56% increase over the previous summit.

Do No Harm- Putting Patients First

In his keynote address, Dr. Freddie Fu (Pittsburgh, PA) provided an overview of recent advances in orthopedics. He praised the ever-growing technological and medical developments in the field but cautioned the audience on providing treatments that do not have strong scientific and clinical evidence.

High Ankle Sprains- In-season return to play following surgery is possible

Dr. Lyle Cain (Birmingham, AL), head team physician at the University of Alabama, reviewed the anatomy as well as surgical options for high ankle sprains (syndesmosis injuries). He then discussed his experience with suture button fixation and its aggressive rehab protocol, which permitted one of his athletes to compete in the college football playoffs less than 4 weeks from his injury.

Hip Arthroscopy- Innovation out of Necessity

Dr. JW Thomas Byrd (Nashville, TN), shared his experience in pioneering the field of hip arthroscopy. He discussed how the treatment of intra-articular hip disorders came about out of necessity to allow high level athletes to return to play. Despite his early success, there was much apprehension in adopting and accepting hip arthroscopy. Dr. Byrd shared with the audience how, through prospectively collecting patient reported outcomes, he was able to demonstrate the clinical utility of hip arthroscopy.

Resident Research Spotlight

This year marked the first resident research competition. Twenty -three abstracts by orthopedic surgery residents from various programs were submitted and the top 5 were invited to present their research. Dr. Sean Slaven from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (Bethesda, MD) was selected as the best resident research for his paper titled, “Revision Arthroscopic Bankart Repair in the Military.” Dr. Slaven showed that revision arthroscopic stabilization of failed primary arthroscopic Bankart repair carried a 36% failure rate in the young, active duty military population, a higher rate than what is seen in the general population.
