Inova Health Center – Oakville earns many awards for architectural design

Inova Health Center – Oakville has been honored with multiple architectural awards recognizing the building’s thoughtful design and intentional focus on wellbeing, efficiency and functionality. These honors affirm Inova’s vision to create environments that keep patient care at the forefront while also creating an efficient, supportive place for our team members to thrive.

“It’s an extraordinary honor to receive recognition across engineering, lighting and healthcare facility design, as it reflects the level of thoughtfulness and rigor invested in this project,” said Heather Russell, Vice President of Eastern Region Development for Inova. “Each of these achievements underscores our collective effort to challenge traditional boundaries, enhance data-driven and evidence-based decisions, and set new standards for excellence in healthcare.”

The team approached the design process with two main questions at the forefront:

  1. What decisions best support the health and wellbeing of Inova’s patients and the team members who care for them?
  2. How can Oakville’s design create a welcoming, supportive environment that helps care teams stay focused on delivering compassionate, high-quality patient care?

Rooted in Inova’s patient-centered philosophy, this approach uses intentional design, high-quality, dependable experiences and integrated technology to create seamless, coordinated care environments that benefit both patients and team members.

Redefining healthcare at Oakville

Oakville’s look and feel are defined by a timeless, welcoming and warm design that supports healing and connection. Distinctive swooping wooden elements, a beautiful gathering space called the Commons and abundant natural light create a calm, restorative environment for patients and team members. Sustainable design features – including a green roof with a landscaped outdoor terrace that connects occupants to nature and the surrounding community – helped Oakville earn LEED Gold Certification.

But Oakville is more than just a beautiful building – it’s designed to support patients, families and care teams every day. Beyond its look and feel, Oakville is notable for the way every design choice the team made is grounded in patient safety and excellence in care delivery. For example, the health center’s third floor features a multispecialty suite where primary care providers share space with specialist doctors in areas like cardiology and pulmonology. This streamlined model reduces delays, so patients get the care they need quickly and efficiently. Doctors at Oakville can collaborate, working together to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation for patients. The physical space’s design supports this coordinated approach to care.

Even better, Oakville will not be the only health center with such a savvy design. Inova will scale Oakville’s functional design approach across hospitals and health centers over time including Inova Health Center – Woodbridge, which opened in early December 2025, and the new Inova Alexandria and Franconia – Springfield campuses.

Focus on team member wellbeing

Team member experience is foundational to Oakville’s design. Integrated technology streamlines workflows and reduces redundancy, making daily work more efficient for clinicians. For example, digital whiteboards with smart workflows minimize manual tasks and interruptions, freeing up more time for patient care. In addition, dedicated respite spaces with natural light provide opportunities for teams to recharge throughout the day.

Throughout Oakville, the spaces are flexible and adaptable, not rigid or overspecialized. That means they’re ready to grow and evolve as healthcare changes. Healthcare is a demanding field, and team-member wellbeing matters – for team members and the patients they care for. Good design supports team member satisfaction, and that’s good for everyone.

Contributions from Inova physicians, team members and the community

More than 400 team members, clinicians, patients and family members helped shape Oakville’s design, creating a space that removes barriers and enhances patient flow, efficiency and teamwork. When developing the design, Inova purposely selected team members at all levels of the organization who are forward-thinking and focused on the future of healthcare delivery. The team also tested it with the community, with focus groups and community stakeholders evaluating everything from the design and layout to the signage and furniture.

“One of the most meaningful things I hear is that Oakville feels personal – like it was designed by people who truly understand both caregiving and healing,” said Rina Bansal, MD, Inova Alexandria Hospital President. “That’s because our team members and patients helped shape this space, and their voices are reflected throughout the facility.”
