Wellness in the New Year

Tips for positive lifestyle changes in 2019

While the holiday season is merry and joyous, it can be equally exhausting and stressful. By the new year, many are relieved that the holiday hustle and bustle has passed and are excited about what’s to come.

It’s usually at this time of the year that many will decide to make positive lifestyle changes in an effort to improve their physical, spiritual, and mental health and well-being. Here are a few tips to help you maintain (or gain!) wellness this year:

  • Schedule a massage. Massage yields many health benefits. A regular massage can help to lower blood pressure, relieve muscle tension, increase circulation, and reduce stress.
  • Commit to “ME” time.  Regularly set aside time to decompress. Take 30 minutes to relax with a warm bath, meditation, or journaling session. These activities can help keep you focused on your goals, unwind from the daily grind, and give yourself a much needed – and deserved – mental break.
  • Focus on your emotional health. Improving our emotional health begins with conscious activities to create “feel good” emotions. We can do this by committing to do one thing nice for ourselves each day. This can include something as simple as taking a walk or working out – or, something more extravagant like treating yourself to a spa treatment or traveling. What’s important is the end result – did it make you happy? Then, it was well worth it!
  • Spend time in Nature. Nature yields a very relaxing and nurturing effect on the body. Spending time outdoors, listening to the sounds of nature, and/or just simply looking at pictures of nature can minimize mental fatigue. Listening to nature sounds can also help to improve your focus and promote better rest.

  • This is a great article. It has been a practice for me to travel yearly, to have a massage every 2 weeks and to have time for myself alone at least to give myself a break from any stress.
