Inova Schar Cancer President John Deeken, MD, named to Modern Healthcare’s 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives List

FAIRFAX, Va. — John Deeken, MD, President of Inova Schar Cancer and co-director of the Inova Schar Head and Neck Cancer Program, has been named to Modern Healthcare’s 2026 list of the “50 Most Influential Clinical Executive.” This national recognition honors physician and clinical leaders whose impact extends beyond their own organizations to help shape the future of healthcare through innovation, operational excellence, clinical leadership and community impact.
A board-certified medical oncologist, Dr. Deeken leads all clinical, operational, research and philanthropic activities across Inova Schar Cancer. Under his leadership, the cancer program has experienced substantial growth in access and clinical services, including more than 132,000 clinic visits, nearly 87,000 infusion visits and more than 66,000 radiation treatments in the past year alone. Since 2020, Inova Schar Cancer has increased clinical volume by 154%, reflecting a multi-year strategy focused on expanding access to advanced, coordinated cancer care across Northern Virginia. With more than 100 cancer physicians specializing in specific cancers, including 50 hematology/medical oncologists, Inova Schar is the largest clinical cancer program in the Washington, DC region.
“Dr. Deeken is a visionary leader whose impact can be seen in every aspect of cancer care at Inova – from expanding access and advancing research to building innovative programs that improve outcomes for patients and families,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, FACS, President and CEO, Inova. “This recognition reflects not only his extraordinary leadership, but also Inova’s unwavering commitment to transforming cancer care for our community and beyond.”
Over the past year, Dr. Deeken led several major milestones for Inova Schar Cancer, including the expansion of autologous and allogeneic transplant services, launch of a new immunotherapy program and opening of an in-house cell processing laboratory. These advancements helped the cancer center achieve accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) for Autologous Transplant and Apheresis in 2025.
He also strengthened the organization’s research infrastructure, enabling activation of 58 new clinical studies and enrollment of more than 1,300 patients in research trials. Under his leadership, the Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center became one of eight national hubs in the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Screening Research Network and achieved the highest enrollment in the country for a multi-cancer early detection study.
Research published in the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Journal of Oncology Practice, and led by Inova Schar Cancer under Dr. Deeken’s leadership, has also demonstrated that coordinated, same-day multidisciplinary clinics for newly diagnosed cancer patients significantly improve care quality, patient experience, and survival, while also reducing costs.
In addition to his work at Inova, Dr. Deeken serves as incoming Chair of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Health Policy Committee, and previously chaired the board of the Cancer Action Coalition of Virginia, helping advance cancer prevention, screening and policy efforts at the state and national levels.
“This recognition reflects the extraordinary teams across Inova Schar Cancer who are deeply committed to delivering compassionate, innovative and evidence-based care,” said Dr. Deeken. “Together, we are building a system that not only treats cancer, but expands access, improves screening and early detection, and advances research — all to improve the lives of patients throughout our region.”
Modern Healthcare’s annual “50 Most Influential Clinical Executives” program recognizes healthcare leaders nationwide who are driving measurable improvements in quality, patient experience, access and operational performance while influencing the future direction of healthcare.
