Falls Church, VA – Once again, Inova Health System has been recognized as the region’s top health system by U.S. News & World Report. Inova Fairfax Hospital was named the #1 Best Hospital in both Virginia and the Washington, DC metropolitan area for the second year in a row. Additionally, IFMC’s Obstetrics and Gynecology department ranked #10 in the country. These rankings are a result of U.S. News evaluating more than 4,750 medical centers across the country.
In addition to overall best hospital rankings, all five Inova hospitals received recognition for high-performance in several specialties and common adult procedures and conditions. Earlier this year, Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital ranked #40 nationwide in Neonatology.
Inova Fair Oaks Hospital ranked #4 in DC and #8 in Virginia, and Inova Alexandria ranked #5 in DC and #10 in the state.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 33rd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive quality care for challenging health conditions or elective procedures.
“World-class healthcare is a team sport and I am proud to lead the Inova team which steps up every day, year after year, to deliver the safest and highest quality care to those we are privileged to serve,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, FACS, President and CEO, Inova. “To be named the number one hospital in the state and the region for the second consecutive year during a transformative period in healthcare illustrates our exceptional team and their ongoing commitment to putting our patients and communities at the center of everything we do.”
For the 2022-2023 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. For the first time, U.S. News rated eligible hospitals in Ovarian Cancer Surgery, Prostate Cancer Surgery and Uterine Cancer Surgery. In the 15 specialties, 164 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. State and metro area rankings reflect the highest performing hospitals in the area across multiple areas of care.
“The hospitals named among the best have extensive medical expertise and a history of delivering good outcomes,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “When patients and their medical professionals are considering their options for care, the rankings are designed to help them identify hospitals that are superior in the kind of care they may need.”
U.S. News evaluated each hospital’s performance using a variety of measures such as survival rates, complication rates, patient experience and level of nursing care. The Best Hospitals methodology factors in data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations and medical specialists.
