Mount Vernon, VA — Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is celebrating 50 years of serving the Mount Vernon and Richmond Highway communities, marking five decades of growth, innovation and commitment to providing high-quality care close to home.
Inova Mount Vernon opened its doors on Oct. 26, 1976, as a 76-bed community hospital with 32 staff members and 70 affiliated physicians. Just six patients were admitted on its first day. Within its first month, the hospital had performed 100 surgeries.
Today, the hospital is home to more than 1,500 team members, performs more than 5,000 surgeries annually and cares for more than 8,000 patients each year. Inova Mount Vernon provides a broad range of services, including emergency care, orthopedics, rehabilitation, behavioral health, stroke care, heart and vascular care, general surgery, spine surgery, and 3 wound care centers. and.
In recent years, Inova Mount Vernon has continued to expand services to meet the changing needs of the community. In 2023, the hospital opened a new inpatient behavioral health unit made possible through philanthropic support from Jeffrey and Amiya Veatch. The hospital is also home to Inova Specialty Hospital, Northern Virginia’s first critical illness recovery hospital, providing specialized care for patients who no longer require an acute-care hospital but continue to need significant clinical support. Mount Vernon has also expanded its clinical and surgical programs to meet the growing needs of the community it serves.
“Fifty years is an extraordinary milestone, and a testament to the generations of patients, families, physicians, nurses, team members, volunteers and community partners who have made Inova Mount Vernon what it is today,” said Roberta Tinch, President, Inova Mount Vernon. “We have grown tremendously since those first six patients walked through our doors in 1976, but our commitment to this community has never changed. As we look to the next 50 years, we will continue to invest in the people, programs and technology that allow us to provide exceptional care close to home and meet the evolving needs of the Mount Vernon and Richmond Highway communities.”
The hospital has earned national recognition for several areas of care. In the 2026-2027 U.S. News & World Report rankings, Inova Mount Vernon was ranked No. 1 in the Washington, D.C., metro area for orthopedics and No. 3 for rehabilitation. Since 2022, the hospital earned and has maintained Magnet® designation, the highest national recognition for nursing excellence, and is pursuing redesignation.
To commemorate the milestone, Inova Mount Vernon hosted a 50th Anniversary Breakfast Celebration on Friday, Oct. 9, bringing together elected officials, community leaders, longtime partners, physicians, volunteers and team members.
