Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Named One of the Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics, IBM Watson Health

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA – Inova Fair Oaks Hospital was recently named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Truven Health Analytics®, part of the IBM Watson HealthTM business. Truven Health Analytics is a leading provider of information and solutions that support healthcare cost and quality improvement.

The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals is the most comprehensive, academically driven study of its kind. It evaluates clinical and operational performance in 11 areas, addressing: inpatient mortality, 30-day mortality rate, complications, core measures, 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate, severity-adjusted average length of stay, mean emergency room throughput, inpatient expense per discharge, Medicare spend per beneficiary, adjusted operating profit margin and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) score (patient rating of overall hospital performance). The study has been conducted annually since 1993. This is fourth time Inova Fair Oaks Hospital has been recognized with this honor.

“The Top 100 Hospital recognition would not be possible without the effort of our entire team and medical staff. We owe it to the community we serve to provide the highest quality care in a safe and comfortable environment,” says John Fitzgerald, Chief Executive Officer of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. “I believe the results recognized by Truven Health Analytics validate our team’s efforts to deliver on that promise. Our goal continues to be one of improving on our performance each and every day.”

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is a top-ranked 182-bed acute care community hospital serving the rapidly growing suburbs of Northern Virginia. Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is committed to providing safe care, excellent service and is continuously striving to improve each patient’s unique experience.

Based on the results of this year’s study, if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities:

  • Nearly than 89,000 additional lives could be saved
  • Over 61,000 additional patients could be complication-free
  • Over $5.6 billion in inpatient costs could be saved
  • The average patient stay would decrease by half a day
  • Over 300,000 fewer discharged patients would be readmitted within 30 days
  • Patients would spend nine minutes less in hospital emergency departments per visit.

“The hospital industry’s ongoing transition from fee-for-service to value-based care appears to be bearing some positive results for both patients and payers,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president at Truven Health Analytics. “The magnitude of improvement we’ve observed over the last five years is greater than any other five-year period we’ve tracked. On top of that, this year’s winners have reached new highs in performance in comparison to peers across the country, which suggests that improvement in value from hospitals is likely to continue.”

The winning hospitals were announced in the March 6th edition of Modern Healthcare magazine.

This is not a good hospital for black patients. I was treated badly and was refused car by a nephrologist. These people stuck together with their lies when I filed a complaint. They sent something in to the credit companies saying I owed them money.

My husband is currently a patient at Fair Oaks Hospital…and I can say it is the “best it has ever been” I worked there in the ER when the hospital first opened. Have been to the ER with children many times, surgeries, and illnesses. Having watched the evolution of “little Fair Oaks hospital” since the late 1980s, they haven’t lost the caring attitude in spite of growing, and remodeling and enlarging the facility. For those of us who worked there in the beginning, “This is a hospital of neighbors taking care of neighbors” was the theme of hospital care….and it is still true. The “Jewel in the Inova Crown” is how it was known then, and it still deserves the title.
