Inova Alexandria Hospital Joint Replacement Programs Receive Joint Commission Recognition

FALLS CHURCH, VA – June 16, 2016 – Inova Alexandria Hospital is the first hospital in the Washington metropolitan area, and the second in Virginia, to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for outstanding care in shoulder replacement. The Gold Seal recognizes facilities that make exceptional efforts to meet the unique needs of patients, provide safe and effective care, and foster better outcomes. In addition, The Joint Commission recertified the hospital’s hip and knee replacement programs.

To earn these distinctions, Inova Alexandria Hospital’s joint replacement surgery programs underwent a rigorous on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission experts. The reviewers evaluated compliance with national care standards and assessed clinical practice guidelines and performance measures.

“Inova Alexandria Hospital has thoroughly demonstrated a high level of care for shoulder, hip and knee replacement patients,” said Wendi J. Roberts, RN, executive director, Certification Programs, The Joint Commission. “Certification is a voluntary process and we commend the hospital for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate the standard of joint replacement care in the community.”

Established in 2002 and awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

“Inova Alexandria Hospital is proud to be first in the Washington area to receive Joint Commission certification of our shoulder replacement surgery program,” said Susan Carroll, Chief Executive Officer, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “This achievement, as well as the recertification of our hip and knee replacement programs, highlights our culture of excellence, our commitment to evidence-based practice and our determination to continually improve care for joint replacement patients throughout the region.”
