Virtual Reality and Patient Simulators Will Enhance Healthcare Professionals’ Skills

Leesburg, VA – (December 11, 2009) – Inova Health System’s commitment to research and education is again being realized, with the opening of the new Claude Moore Simulation Lab at Inova Loudoun Hospital. Virtual reality, patient simulators and computer technology will enable nurses and other healthcare professionals to sharpen their skills, further enhancing patient care in Loudoun County. Members of the media are invited to attend the ribbon cutting and tour on Monday, Dec.14. This event is not open to the public.

WHAT:
Claude Moore Charitable Foundation Simulation Lab
Ribbon Cutting and Tour

WHEN:

The new state-of-the-art simulation lab will enable healthcare professionals to practice a number of skills, from taking vital signs or blood samples to inserting air tubes and performing minimally invasive surgery. Computer-controlled mannequins simulate a range of medical conditions, such as asthma or a heart attack. The mannequins turn blue if there is a lack of oxygen, or they might “complain” of stomach cramping. Instructors can change the symptoms on the mannequins with the push of a button.

This high level of interactivity encourages critical thinking and helps healthcare workers think on their feet. Nurses and students no longer have to wait for real patient situations. With the simulation lab, they can be exposed to various conditions and learn how to treat them, in the safety of the classroom.
