Ladies, do you leak urine when you cough, sneeze or laugh? Do you frequently have the urge to go to the bathroom? You’re not alone. About half of women over age 50 have this condition. And it’s got a name: pelvic floor disorder.
Pelvic floor disorder describes a number of conditions that affect the pelvic muscles and organs, causing problems such as urinary or fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Because pelvic floor disorder involves sensitive areas and is often caused by childbirth, women are sometimes embarrassed to talk to their doctors about symptoms, or they will accept symptoms as “normal.” Fortunately, help is available for the unpleasant incontinence, constipation, pain and pressure the disorder can cause.
Inova Alexandria Hospital’s (IAH’s) multidisciplinary team provides individualized treatment for every patient. This may include physical therapy and training with exercises, or procedures to correct the issue. IAH’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center and the Inova Physical Therapy Centers offer a specialized pelvic floor rehabilitation program that provides a safe space for women to learn and practice exercises that they can then bring home.
Thankfully, with so much treatment readily available, women with pelvic floor disorder no longer have to feel resigned to their condition or forced to manage by themselves.

Giving birth to two 11 pound daughters 43 & 42 years ago I have tried to resolve this issue with the bladder lift surgery & mesh surgery which did not resolve the embarrassment. I hope these exercises help, medications help after taking Azo for years now Detrol LA 2 times/day. I am grateful for any relief. Drinking water is so vital each day and I have dehydrated because I go to the bathroom 12-15 times in 24 hours when I drink 8 glasses of water. I am unable to sleep.
I would like to participate in the program for
Pelvic Floor Disorder.
