Empowered to outsmart cancer

How one patient turned family history into a healthier future

When Wendy Wade’s mother passed away from breast cancer in May 2024, she was left with not just grief but a pressing question: Where could she turn to ensure she was not headed for the same fate?

Her mother’s oncologist recommended the Inova Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center. The Center, part of Inova Schar Cancer, specializes in working with people who haven’t had cancer but want to understand – and lower – their risk.  By bringing genetics, screening and prevention together in one place, it’s easier for patients to confidently navigate their options.

So in November 2024, Wendy scheduled a genetic test to look for changes in her tumor suppressor genes, including BRCA1 and BRCA2 – the main genes linked to inherited risk of breast and ovarian cancers. The test results showed that she carries a BRCA1 mutation, significantly increasing her chance of developing cancer.

“My mom didn’t have any genetic mutations, so I assumed I would be the same,” Wendy said. “I was shocked by my results.  But knowing what I was up against meant I could do something about it.”

At the Inova Saville Center, that “something” became a comprehensive, personalized prevention plan. Led by a team of genetic counselors, surgeons, oncologists and other specialists, Wendy’s care plan was designed around her unique genetic profile, family history and personal health goals. It included a variety of interventions, from risk-reducing surgeries to ongoing screenings, counseling and lifestyle guidance.

Elizabeth Stark, a senior genetic counselor at Inova Saville Center, said, “Every care plan is customized. Genes give us a base, but we also consider occupation, personal history and family background to design a plan that truly fits each person.”

“I’ve lost both parents to cancer. It’s scary,” Wendy said. “But knowing I have a team looking out for my health makes it less overwhelming. In fact, learning about my genetic mutation almost feels like a gift – because with the Inova Saville Center team guiding me, I feel supported and in control.”

Wendy’s story is a powerful reminder that knowledge is more than information – it’s the first step toward taking action, protecting your health and reclaiming your peace of mind.
