Is it time for a colonoscopy?

Colorectal cancer – often called colon cancer – is one of the most preventable cancers when detected early. For many people, however, the idea of screening can feel intimidating. At Inova, our goal is to make screening easier, more accessible, and more comfortable, backed by the expertise of our expanding gastroenterology (GI) team.
Early detection saves lives. And today, with rising rates of colorectal cancer in younger adults, screening is more important than ever.
Why updated colorectal cancer screening guidelines matter
More than 150,000 adults in the U.S. are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year. Once considered a disease of older adults, colorectal cancer is increasingly affecting people under age 50, prompting national experts to lower the recommended screening age.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) now recommends that all adults begin screening at age 45 if they are at average risk. Those with a family history or other risk factors may need to start earlier – a decision best made with a primary care provider (PCP) or GI specialist.
Early detection dramatically improves outcomes. When colorectal cancer is found before it spreads, the five‑year survival rate is about 90%. Starting screening on time is one of the most powerful steps you can take to protect your health.
Why colonoscopy is still the most effective screening tool
A colonoscopy remains the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening. It is the only test that can both detect and prevent cancer during the same procedure.
During a colonoscopy:
- You are comfortably asleep under anesthesia
- A GI physician examines the entire colon using a thin, flexible tube with a camera
- If polyps – small growths that can become cancerous – are found, the physician can remove them immediately
This ability to detect and remove precancerous polyps in one step is what makes colonoscopy uniquely powerful.
Inova’s expanded GI capacity
Thanks to recent growth across Inova’s GI services and our state‑of‑the‑art endoscopy centers, patients now have more appointment availability, more locations to choose from, and faster access to screening and follow‑up care.
Preparing for your colonoscopy
Colonoscopy preparation has improved in recent years. Your Inova provider will give you clear, personalized instructions, which typically include:
- Eating lightly (“white foods”) in the days leading up to your procedure
- Switching to clear liquids the day before
- Using a prescribed bowel prep solution to cleanse your colon
A clean colon = the best results. If prep is incomplete, you may need to repeat the procedure – so it’s important to follow instructions closely.
Tips for a smoother experience
- Review your prep instructions early to avoid surprises
- Stock up on recommended foods and beverages ahead of time
- Ask questions – our team is here to help
- Stay near a restroom the day before your procedure
Other screening options
While colonoscopy is the most comprehensive screening method, alternatives exist for people who cannot or prefer not to undergo one.
1. At‑home stool tests
Noninvasive and convenient, these tests look for signs of cancer in your stool.
- FIT (fecal immunochemical test): Screens for blood in the stool; done annually
- FIT‑DNA (e.g., Cologuard®): Detects blood and DNA markers; typically done every three years
A positive stool test always requires follow‑up with a colonoscopy.
2. CT “virtual” colonoscopy
Uses CT imaging instead of a scope. Less invasive, but:
- Done while you are awake (no sedation required)
- Does not examine the entire colon as thoroughly
- Cannot remove polyps
- May still require a standard colonoscopy if abnormalities are detected
3. Flexible sigmoidoscopy
Examines only the lower portion of the colon. If polyps are found, a full colonoscopy is still needed for removal and evaluation.
Which test is right for you?
Your personal risk factors, comfort level, and medical history will guide the decision. A discussion with your primary care provider or gastroenterologist can help determine the best option.
At Inova, we encourage you not to delay screening. With expanded GI capacity and improved availability across our system, it’s easier than ever to take this important step for your health.
