In the past, chemotherapy treatment was given to patients based on where in the body the cancer began, not taking in the factors of the molecular diversity of the individual patient’s cancer. Over the years, the development and advancement of the treatment for cancer has improved by applying molecular testing to determine individual patient tumors through DNA, RNA, and proteins.

As explained in a new article, “Precision medicine targets molecular features in cancer cells that are not in normal cells and it is now a focus of drug development,” says Timothy Cannon, MD, Director, Molecular Tumor Board Program and Co-Director, Gastrointestinal Cancer Program at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute. New strategies that modernize clinical trials and allow multiple drugs to be tested simultaneously have helped make progress with successful individualized treatment in cancer care.
