Inova Celebrates the Launch of the Inova Reinsch Pierce Cardiomyopathy Program

Fairfax, VA – Inova marked the unveiling of the Inova Reinsch Pierce Cardiomyopathy Program with a special gathering of Inova leaders, supporters and community members. This program, made possible by philanthropic support from Lola C. Reinsch, helps address the need for specialized care for the growing number of patients with cardiomyopathies in our community.

The Inova Reinsch Pierce Cardiomyopathy Program, as part of Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, will allow Inova to blaze new trails in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and support the work of visionary clinicians, scientists and researchers dedicated to developing novel, safe and effective treatment strategies.

“Despite the wide availability of lifesaving medications and cardiac procedures, and all that we know about living a heart-healthy lifestyle, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S.,” said Mitchell Psotka, MD, PhD, Section Chief, Inova Heart Failure and Transplant Program. “Thanks to the generous gift from Lola C. Reinsch, this program will allow for research and participation in clinical trials and research studies. It will enable Inova to reach more patients through screening and education to help ensure heart disease is survivable and patients can live longer, healthier lives.”

Cardiomyopathies, conditions of the heart muscle that make it harder for the heart to pump, frequently go undiagnosed, so the exact prevalence is unknown. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 500 adults may suffer from some form of cardiomyopathy. This number is projected to increase as the population ages. The Inova Reinsch Pierce Cardiomyopathy Program will address clinical areas such as genetic cardiomyopathy and heart failure, right ventricular failure and pulmonary hypertension, sleep apnea, and more.

“I stepped forward to make this transformational gift in honor of the exceptional care I received when I faced my own life-changing heart condition just two years ago. Because of my personal health crisis, I was inspired to give what I could to advance heart care for other patients experiencing cardiomyopathies,” said Lola C. Reinsch.
