American Heart Association and American Stroke Association Recognizes Inova Hospitals for Excellence in Stroke Care

Fairfax, VA — The American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA) Get With The Guidelines ®-Stroke program has recognized all five Inova hospitals with Gold Plus awards for achieving excellence in stroke care, including:

  • Gold Plus – Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite (Inova Alexandria, Loudoun, and Mount Vernon hospitals)
  • Gold Plus – Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus (Inova Fairfax and Fair Oaks hospitals)
  • Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll (all hospitals)
  • Advanced Therapy (Inova Alexandria Hospital)

Stroke is the #5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures and bleeds. Subsequently, these affected areas of the brain become starved for vital nutrients, which  can lead to permanent brain damage.  Early stroke detection and treatment that reduce the likelihood for further brain damage are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

“Receiving the Gold Plus recognition for Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke program is a testament to Inova’s unwavering commitment to excellence in stroke care,” said Laith Altaweel, Inova System Stroke Medical Director. “This achievement reflects the dedication of our exceptional stroke teams who provide the highest standard of care to stroke patients.  We are proud to be recognized for our efforts in implementing evidence-based guidelines and protocols, ensuring optimal outcomes and improved quality of life for those affected by stroke.”

These designations indicate that Inova applies the most up-to-date evidence-based treatment guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes in the communities we serve.  Click here to learn more about Get With The Guidelines ®-Stroke.
