All Five Inova Hospitals Awarded Spring 2023 ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from Leapfrog Group

Grades reflect top national performance in patient safety, particularly through COVID-19 pandemic

Fairfax, VA – All five Inova hospitals received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. This national distinction celebrates Inova’s achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. The new grades reflect performance primarily during the height of the pandemic.

Excellence in healthcare is not a one-time achievement, but a habit of continuously striving to live our values of putting the patient at the center of everything we do,” said Chapy Venkatesan, MD, Chief Quality and Safety Officer, Inova. “Receiving straight A grades from the Leapfrog Group year after year is a testament to our unwavering commitment to provide the safest, highest quality of care.”

A national distinction, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades recognize Inova’s achievements in protecting patients from harm and providing safer healthcare. Only 27 hospitals in Virginia were awarded “A” grades for the spring term of 2023, five of which are Inova hospitals:

“I am, once again, immensely proud to see all five Inova hospitals receive top grades from the Leapfrog Group, demonstrating our laser focus on prioritizing patient safety and delivering high-quality care, despite the ongoing challenges presented by the healthcare landscape,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, President and CEO, Inova.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

“We find with these newest Hospital Safety Grades that patient safety has suffered major setbacks nationally during the pandemic. But that’s not the case at Inova, all of which have earned straight ‘A’ grades for more than a decade,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.  “That is an extraordinary accomplishment, particularly now, and shows a relentless determination to put patients first no matter what the circumstances. My congratulations for inspiring all Americans with your leadership against all the odds.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
