Alexandria City Council Approves Development Special Use Permit for New Inova Alexandria Campus at Former Landmark Mall Site

At its March 18 meeting, the Alexandria City Council unanimously approved Inova Health System’s application to construct a medical campus at the WestEnd Town Center (formerly Landmark Mall).

This new Inova Alexandria medical campus will replace the current hospital on Seminary Road, and will include an acute-care hospital, cancer center and specialty care center. The new state-of-the-art facilities will bring Inova’s comprehensive, patient-centered programs and services, including expansion of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute to the WestEnd where we will offer radiation, infusion and Life with Cancer closer to home. The new hospital is designed with a larger emergency room, private patient rooms and careful attention to creating a healing environment for our patients and families. The specialty care center will house an estimated 50 specialty physician offices to care for patients on the same campus as the new hospital. The medical complex is expected to open in 2028.

“It is our duty to ensure that our new hospital is not only a state-of-the-art facility, but also a place where compassion, excellence, and innovation come together to provide the best possible care for our community” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, FACS, President and CEO of Inova. “Thank you to the Mayor and City Council, City Staff, and all our partners who helped get to this unanimous approval today. We are thrilled with Council’s action and are excited to make this vision come to life.”

“For over three years our residents, our staff and our partners have been working to see this day. The new Inova Alexandria Hospital campus is a generational investment in the future of our City. The redevelopment of the Landmark Mall site is an economic revitalization for the WestEnd, but far more importantly will provide a comprehensive center for health and wellness for our residents. Now, we go to work to bring this vision to reality!” said Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson.

“This approval turns an exciting, proposed project into reality,” said Stephanie Landrum, President and CEO of the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership. “With this step, the Inova Alexandria Campus now becomes the anchor that redefines one of our largest neighborhoods and is a tangible and visible signal of the strength of the Alexandria economy. This helps us attract additional investments, employers, and residents that will bring the WestEnd project to life.”
