Inova Blood Donor Services in Need of O+ Blood

Falls Church, VA – Every 2 seconds, a patient requires a blood transfusion and right now, blood usage is outpacing donations. Inova Blood Donor Services is currently experiencing a critically low supply of O+ blood and is asking the community to help.

Blood donation is safe. Inova has safety precautions in place to protect donors and our team members. Donors are asked to make and keep appointments to ensure safety protocols are followed. All blood types are needed and all successful donations will be tested for COVID-19 antibodies.

In order to keep our shelves stocked with life-saving blood to help our patients and neighbors, we need more than 250 volunteer donors every day.  IBDS relies on generous, healthy donors to make a difference and save up to three lives with less than an hour of their time. Inova supplies blood to hospitals throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area and beyond.

We need all blood types, but right now we are especially in need of O+ – 38% of the U.S. population is O+, which means 38 out of 100 people have the ability to heal 84% of all patients. O+ blood donors have a significant impact on life-saving care, as A+, B+ and AB+ patients can all receive O+ blood transfusions in emergency situations.

Due to COVID-19 and school closures, many high school and community business partners have been unable to host much need blood drives to keep our shelves stocked.  We are urging all who can donate, to make an appointment today at your local blood donor center.
