John Moynihan, MD, Selected President, Inova Surgery Service Line

Falls Church, VA – John J. Moynihan, MD, FACS, has been selected as President, Inova Surgery Service Line, where he will be responsible for oversight of clinical and operational functions of the surgery service line, including general surgery, trauma, urology, bariatric surgery, anesthesia, and all surgical subspecialties not associated with a separate service line.

Dr. Moynihan has served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon in Chief at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus since 2012.   Dr. Moynihan completed his surgery residency at Georgetown University Hospital and a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Tennessee.  He joined Inova Fair Oaks Hospital as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery in 1990.  He also served as President and Managing Physician for Virginia Surgery Associates from 2000 to 2011 before being named Chief Medical Officer at Inova Fairfax Hospital in 2011.

“Dr. Moynihan has been an integral part of Inova’s Department of Surgery for many years and has led the team in the advancement of new surgical techniques, clinical research projects, surgical education and improving patient outcomes,” said Steve Motew, MD, Chief, Clinical Enterprise, Inova. “We look forward to having him lead the Inova Surgery Service Line and continuing to provide the best quality care to the community we are privileged to serve.”

Dr. Moynihan served on the credentials and quality medical staff committees before becoming Medical Staff President in 2010.  During his tenure, he organized an Inova system-wide Surgical Quality and Outcomes Committee, which brought together nursing, anesthesia, and surgery to review patient care and implement strategies to improve patient care and outcomes across the system.

Inova’s Department of Surgery has a robust clinical research program that contributes valuable new knowledge to the academic medical community.  Under Dr. Moynihan’s leadership, Inova opened the Advanced Surgical Technology and Education Center (ASTEC) , a 6,900 square foot surgical simulation center that combines a classroom and a large, centralized skills training area with high fidelity operating room, perioperative and post anesthesia care unit bays, functional endoscopic ORs and state of the observation and recording capabilities.  This innovative space allows surgical resident and medical students the opportunity to practice real life, critical surgical scenarios and hone their skills before entering an operating room.

Dr. Moynihan earned a Bachelor of Arts, Cum Laude, from the College of the Holy Cross, in Worcester, MA, and a Doctor of Medicine from Georgetown University School of Medicine.
