Inova Mount Vernon Hospital’s Orthopedic Surgeons Give Gift of Mobility

Two patients to receive free joint replacement surgery

Mount Vernon, VA – Inova Mount Vernon Hospital orthopedic surgeons Robert Sershon, MD and William Hamilton, MD, participating in Operation Walk USA, will donate their world-class surgical skills to benefit two local residents, giving each of them the gift of mobility and improved quality of life with free joint replacement surgery.

Dr. Robert Sershon and patient Renee.

“Operation Walk USA is our annual way to give back to the Northern Virginia community,” commented orthopedic surgeon C. Anderson Engh, Jr., MD, Medical Director of Inova Joint Replacement Center, a partnership between Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and Anderson Orthopedic Clinic.  “We have reached a milestone now that we are in our tenth year and know the greatest gift we can give is to help return those in need to mobility and improved quality of life. This is a truly inspirational and compelling program that celebrates our patients and all those who volunteer their time and services.”

A humanitarian effort, the program provides every element of treatment ─ surgery, hospitalization, including pre-and post-operative care ─ at no cost to patients who may not qualify for government health coverage, have insurance or afford surgery on their own.  In fact, the Inova Joint Replacement Center at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital has participated in this program since its inception, providing over 50 free hip or knee replacements at a total value of over $1M to local residents who otherwise would not be able to afford surgery.

Renee Bradley of Reston is one patient who will receive the gift of mobility. Bradley will have bilateral hip replacement at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital on December 6, benefiting from the hospital’s nationally ranked surgical and rehabilitation program. Read her story here.
