Inova Schar Cancer Institute Named 2019 Best Healthcare Project by “ENR MidAtlantic”

Recognizes Inova Schar for its innovative design and construction

Fairfax, VirginiaInova Schar Cancer Institute, a state-of-the-art cancer care destination in the DC Metro area and a department of Inova Fairfax Hospital, was recently named the 2019 ‘Best Healthcare Project’ in the region by ENR MidAtlantic, a leading engineering, design and construction publication.

“Inova Schar was designed with our patients in mind, to ensure our team of cancer specialists can coordinate and deliver unmatched logistical, clinical and emotional support all under one roof,” said John Deeken, MD, President of Inova Schar Cancer Institute. “Through its engineering, design and construction, our one-of-a-kind facility enables doctors, specialists and caregivers to come to the patient, not the other way around, so that patients are empowered to prioritize themselves and find comfort and strength during treatment.”

At 420,000 square feet, the new Inova Schar Cancer Institute facility is the flagship location in Inova’s cancer care network serving the DC Metro area and all of Northern Virginia, from Woodbridge to Leesburg. On the site of the former ExxonMobil location in Fairfax, across from Inova’s largest hospital, Inova Schar is the anchor project for the creation of a clinical, academic, and research innovation district on the 117-acre Inova Center for Personalized Health medical and technology campus.

Designed by the architecture firm Wilmot Sanz, a leader in healthcare design, and renovated and built by Clark Construction, the Inova Schar building features a genomic- and nature-inspired design. Its unique interior atrium brings together glass and light to welcome patients and visitors in, along with 124 exam rooms; an expansive outdoor terrace overlooking a park; water features, natural materials and sound to create a relaxing environment; and chemotherapy infusion rooms on upper floors offering natural light and pleasant views.

ENR MidAtlantic, part of Engineering News-Record (ENR), selected its 2019 ‘Best Projects’ following consideration of more than 78 design and construction projects located throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, including Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Two panels of industry judges evaluated projects based on the ability of the project team to overcome challenges; the project’s contribution to the industry and community; safety; and construction and design quality.
