The Washington DC region is experiencing a critical shortage of blood donations from ALL blood types due to decreased blood donations and increased patient needs for blood transfusions. Summer is always a tough time for blood donations—this year is like none other, there is a nationwide blood shortage.
Due to a nationwide blood shortage, other blood centers are unable to help support Inova Blood Donor Services when we fall short on donations from local donors. Inova Blood Donor Services is working hard every day to meet the needs of the patients in our community during these difficult times.
Donors are desperately needed to answer the call and donate blood as soon as possible to re-stock our shelves and help save the lives of patients in our community.
All blood transfused in hospitals comes from volunteer blood donors. Blood donations take less than an hour and can help save up to three patients. To make your appointment to donate blood or to learn more, please call 1-866-BLOODSAVES or visit inovablood.org

Inova is Northern Virginia’s leading nonprofit healthcare provider, employing more than 18,000 team members and serving more than 2 million individuals annually through an integrated network of hospitals, primary and specialty care practices, emergency and urgent care centers, outpatient services and destination institutes such as the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, Inova Schar Cancer Institute and Inova Neuroscience and Spine Institute. Our mission is to provide world-class healthcare – every time, every touch – to each person in every community we have the privilege to serve.
Inova Blood Donor Services plays a critical role in the region by supporting the majority of hospitals in the Washington DC metro region, including all Inova hospitals, with a safe and adequate blood supply for patients in the diverse community we serve. To support the needs of the region, Inova Blood Donor Services must collect 200 units a day from generous blood, platelet, plasma and double red cell donors.
