Inova Announces Dedication, Grand Opening of State-of-the-Art Inova Schar Cancer Institute

New medical innovation campus to be home to most advanced cancer care in D.C. region

March 19, 2019, Fairfax, Virginia – This spring, Inova Health System will celebrate its position at the forefront of cancer diagnosis and treatment with the opening of the new flagship location of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Fairfax, the first facility in Northern Virginia and the broader D.C. region to offer complete, patient-centric cancer care under one roof. Inova will host dedication events on April 24 and will open to patients on May 13.

“As a surgical oncologist, I am thrilled to take part in the opening of this new center for cancer care, which reaffirms Inova’s long tradition of bringing the latest research, innovation and clinical trials to patients in Northern Virginia,” says J. Stephen Jones, MD, President and CEO of Inova. “As a leading health system in our region, Inova has always put our patients first, bringing them healing and hope, and Inova Schar continues that legacy.”

The new facility, a department of Inova Fairfax Hospital, serves as a hub for Inova’s clinical, research and technological expertise and also serves Inova’s existing locations for cancer treatment across Northern Virginia. The new building will occupy over 438,000 square feet on the Inova Center for Personalized Health medical innovation campus. The facility was made possible through a $50 million gift from developer and philanthropist Dwight Schar and his wife Martha.

“Inova Schar is a leader in the national movement to personalize lifesaving therapies for people with cancer and to provide integrated, multidisciplinary care,” says John Deeken, MD, Acting President, Inova Schar Cancer Institute. “Every aspect of the new Inova Schar facility has been designed with the patient experience in mind, starting with leading doctors and researchers who deliver the highest standard of compassionate and collaborative cancer care, using integrated therapies like oncology diet planning and mindfulness training. Our vision is to treat cancer with the best science and the best heart.”

Additional details about dedication events will be available at a later date. To learn more about Inova Schar and Inova cancer care services, please visit inova.org/cancer or follow @InovaSchar on Twitter.
