Media Advisory: Inova holding Congressional Blood Drive hosted by House Majority Whip Steve Scalise

Washington, DC – Inova Blood Donor Services is proud to host its second annual Congressional Blood Drive from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14, in the foyer of Rayburn House Office Building. The blood drive is being sponsored by House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (LA-1st) and will be open to the Capitol Hill community and the general public.

This year’s blood drive coincides with the one-year anniversary of the shooting incident in which Whip Scalise and three others were injured on a baseball field in Alexandria during a practice for the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game for Charity. Whip Scalise and the others were taken to nearby hospitals, where blood from local donors played a critical role in their treatment and recovery.

During last year’s blood drive, 218 units of life-saving blood products were collected from 221 donors – more than three times what would be collected from a typical blood drive. Inova Blood Donor Services partners with hospitals across the National Capital Region to provide a safe and adequate supply of blood products.

June 14 is World Blood Donor Day. At least 250 blood products each day must be collected to ensure there is a safe, pure, and potent blood supply for patients across the region. All blood products will be collected at this blood drive:  Whole Blood, Red Cells, Platelets, and Plasma.

Blood donations take less than an hour and can help save up to three patients.  Please make an impact and donate to help those in our area who are in need of blood.
