Inova Alexandria Hospital Receives Disability Awareness Award from Alexandria Chamber of Commerce

Hospital Honored for its Project Search Program to Provide On-the-Job Training

Alexandria, VA – June 26, 2018 – Inova Alexandria Hospital recently received The Hiring Award from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and the Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities.

The award recognizes the hospital’s Project Search program, a community-minded initiative that helps students with cognitive and physical disabilities develop on the-job training. High school seniors spend a year at the hospital, working in various departments. The program is a collaboration among Inova Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria City Public Schools and support service agencies in Virginia. Since it began in 2011, dozens of local students have completed the one-year internship. Several have remained with Inova Alexandria and work at the hospital in patient transport.

The Hiring Award is one of the Chamber’s Disability Awareness Awards, given annually to honor Alexandria residents and businesses that make significant strides in the area of disability empowerment.

“Inova Alexandria Hospital is honored to receive this award that recognizes our commitment to help people with disabilities further their careers,” says Susan Carroll, FACHE, MBA, MHA, CEO of Inova Alexandria Hospital. “Project Search is a stepping stone for these students to become productive members of society. Many have gone on to apply for permanent positions, with more than 30 percent hired at Inova and others finding jobs at organizations across Alexandria.”
