Inova Loudoun Hospital Expands Robotic Surgery Capabilities

Leesburg, VA — Inova Loudoun Hospital (ILH) is pleased to announce the expansion of its robotic surgery capabilities with the addition of the da Vinci Xi® robot which arrived last week and the MAKO Total Hip and Knee technology arriving in February.  This state-of-the-art equipment will further streamline surgeries and treatments and enhance the patient’s experience.

Both the Xi® and MAKO incorporate 3-D imaging technology to improve visualization for doctors and may shorten recovery times for patients.  The Xi® is used in various cardiac, colorectal, gynecologic, thoracic and urologic procedures; the MAKO system can be used in both knee and hip surgeries.

Robotic-assisted surgery puts the surgeon’s hands at the controls of a robotic platform so refined that even the most complex, delicate procedures can be performed through very small incisions with unmatched precision.  The advantages of robotic surgery for the patient are significant and may include:

  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less blood loss
  • Fewer complications
  • Less need for narcotic pain medicine
  • Faster recovery
  • Smaller incisions resulting in minimal scarring

“Robotic surgeries were first offered at Inova Loudoun in 2013 with the promise of expanding service in this area; with this additional equipment we’ve kept our promise to the community,” said

Deborah Addo, CEO, Inova Loudoun Hospital. “We are committed to providing our surgeons and patients with the most advanced technology available.”

ILH offers both inpatient and outpatient (same day) surgeries.  The hospital’s newly renovated and expanded surgical center features nine state-of-the-art operating suites, two special procedure rooms, and the latest technology in minimally-invasive robotic surgery.  In addition to regularly scheduled surgeries, the surgery center department is staffed for emergency surgery, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

ILH is a Joint Commission Center of Excellence for hip, knee, and spinal surgery and is one of only 59 hospitals nationwide, and the only hospital in Northern Virginia, to earn straight “A’s” in patient safety since the inception of the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade in 2012.

The Medical Surgical Unit at Inova Loudoun Hospital has received the prestigious AMSN PRISM Award®, a new honor recognizing exceptional nursing practice, leadership and outcomes in hospital medical-surgical units across the country.  Inova Loudoun is one of only 16 hospitals in the U.S. to receive this honor in 2016.
