Inova Alexandria Hospital Epilepsy Program accredited by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC)

NAEC accredits centers with highest level of medical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy

ALEXANDRIA, VA Inova is pleased to announce that Inova Alexandria Hospital’s Epilepsy Program has been accredited by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a level 3 epilepsy center.

A level 3 center provides medical, neuropsychological, and psychosocial services needed to treat patients with refractory epilepsy.  A key element of a Level 3 center is advanced neurodiagnostic evaluation of refractory epilepsy, seizures of unknown cause and assessment for medication changes. “Our epilepsy center offers evaluation for epilepsy surgery and implantation of the vagus nerve stimulator,” said Jalil Bentaleb, BSN, RN-BC, SCRN, Director, Neuroscience.

“We are very pleased to be accredited as a Level 3 by the NAEC, our team of physicians, clinicians and staff has worked extremely hard on meeting all of the guidelines and requirements for accreditation.  Our goal has always been to deliver the highest quality care possible to all of our patients and this accreditation is an example of our success,” said Dr. Lewis Eberly, Medical Director of Neuroscience and Medical Director of the Epilepsy Program at Inova Alexandria Hospital.  Jalil Bentaleb and Dr. Lewis Eberly have been champions in bringing this accreditation to reality, we are extremely proud of them and their team”, said Susan Carroll, Inova Regional Executive Officer – Eastern Region.

A key component of NAEC’s work to support strong specialized epilepsy centers is its development of guidelines and standards for epilepsy center care. Epilepsy centers provide a comprehensive team approach to the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy.
