Inova Fairfax Medical Campus Receives Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Accreditation

FALLS CHURCH, VA – Inova this week announced that the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC) has been approved as a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF)-accredited center.  CFF care centers provide expert care and specialized disease management to people living with cystic fibrosis (CF), which has led to improved length and quality of life for people with CF. The Cystic Fibrosis Center at IFMC is a combined effort of the Advanced Lung Disease Program and Inova Children’s Hospital—in partnership with the Pediatric Lung and Allergy Center.

The pediatric program offers a team approach to the care of cystic fibrosis patients. While most care occurs outside the hospital, inpatient care is provided in the Inova Children’s Hospital Level IV NICU, PICU and pediatric inpatient units. Outpatient services for children are provided at the Pediatric Lung and Allergy Center, a division of Fairfax Neonatal Associates, P.C.  The Pediatric Lung and Allergy Center has been an affiliate site of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for the past several years.

“This accreditation is a testament to the multi-disciplinary care that our program provides children with CF,” said James Clayton, MD, Medical Director of the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Program and the Pediatric Lung and Allergy Center. “We look forward to engaging with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on continued research endeavors, as we strive toward new treatments for the disease.”

Each year more than 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed in the U.S.; the majority of which are under the age of 2. Because of advances in treatment driven by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the life-expectancy for children diagnosed with CF has drastically increased in recent decades. Today, more than half of those living with CF are over the age of 18.

Inova’s Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant Program, which currently provides care for more than 1,300 patients, houses the Inova Adult CF Program and is the Washington Region’s only Lung Transplant Center.  It is one of only seven programs in the nation to have accreditation as a Cystic Fibrosis Care Center, Lung Transplant Center, Comprehensive Care Center for Pulmonary Hypertension, and Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Care Center.  Each year 150 to 200 people with CF receive lung transplants;  Inova has performed more than 200 lung transplants over the past 10 years, with one-month and one-year survival rates exceeding the national average.

There are 120 CFF-accredited care centers in the country, located at teaching and community hospitals, designed to offer the best care, treatments and support to CF patients.

“The CF Center at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus offers new hope to both adults and children dealing with serious life-threatening lung diseases that were once considered untreatable,” said Christopher O’Connor, MD, CEO and Executive Director of the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute. “The accreditation from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as a Care Center emphasizes the excellent and innovative care we provide to patients suffering from Cystic Fibrosis.”

“I am proud to lead a dedicated CF care team that provides comprehensive care to CF patients. It is our mission to provide compassionate and state-of-the-art care to help patients live as full and productive lives as possible,” said A. Whitney Brown, MD, Medical Director of the Inova Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program.

The CF Foundation’s care center network combines clinical research with medical care best practices, and has been cited by the National Institutes of Health as a model of effective and efficient health care delivery for a chronic disease. Inova’s Advanced Lung Disease & Transplant Program actively participates in state-of-the-art research studies to pursue more effective treatment for lung conditions like cystic fibrosis, and collaborates with the National Institute of Health to develop new therapies for advanced lung diseases.
