Leesburg, VA — November 29, 2016 — Inova Loudoun Hospital announced today a historic $5 million commitment from Fred, Karen and Bobbi Schaufeld to support the physical expansion and programmatic growth of the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute – Schaufeld Family Heart Center.  In addition, this gift will also help fund community education around cardiovascular health. This represents the largest cash gift to Inova Loudoun Hospital and the largest single contribution to cardiac care throughout the Inova system.

“Over the past two decades, the medical profession’s progress in understanding and treating of cardiac issues is nothing short of staggering. After my sister-in-law suffered a heart attack at home, followed by a full-on cardiac arrest at Loudoun Hospital and a life-saving helicopter ride to Fairfax, it became clear that a first-rate cardiac facility would be incredibly valuable to our community. We were blessed to be able to play a seed role back then and, in light of all they’ve accomplished, we’re even more thrilled to financially lead this effort now. Together, Inova and Loudoun County perform miracles . . . every day of the year,” stated Fred Schaufeld.

The Schaufeld family has had a significant impact on cardiovascular care in Loudoun County through an initial gift of $1 million in 2005 to establish the Schaufeld Family Heart Center at Inova Loudoun Hospital. Over the past decade, the Schaufeld Family Heart Center has seen exponential growth and patient outcome improvements, including a dramatic decrease in the average ‘door to balloon’ time at the Cath Lab, from 119 minutes in 2009 to below 65 minutes today, well below the national benchmark of 90 minutes. Annually, the team of accomplished cardiologists, highly skilled nurses and dedicated support staff see more than 8,307 patients at the Schaufeld Family Heart Center’s Cath Lab, making it the highest utilized lab on a per room basis across the entire Inova system.

“My vision is to make the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute a top ten cardiovascular center nationally, and it will take the generous support of philanthropists like the Schaufeld family to get us there. This gift, the single largest to cardiac care throughout the Inova system, will have a transformational impact on our ability to provide superior cardiovascular care to our patients in Loudoun County,” said Christopher O’Connor, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Inova Heart and Vascular Institute.

“We are grateful for the Schaufelds’ incredible generosity and continued commitment to cardiac and vascular services at Inova Loudoun. Their years of support have without a doubt contributed to the countless lives that have been saved,” commented Dean M. Pollock, MD, FACC, Medical Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab and Director of Cardiac Rehab, Inova Heart and Vascular Institute – Schaufeld Family Heart Center.

Enhancements and additions to the Schaufeld Family Heart Center will take place in two phases. Phase one will include:

  • New state-of-the-art Electrophysiology Lab to augment the two existing labs
  • Upgrading the two current Cardiac Cath and Vascular procedure rooms and adding five new minor procedure rooms
  • New nurses station
  • Improved patient and family reception area
  • Patient bays, currently separated by curtains, will be expanded and built with walls to promote privacy and a better healing environment
  • Create capacity for a disease-state specific observation unit
  • Expansion of cardiovascular services to include vascular surgery

Phase two includes:

  • New Schaufeld Family Heart Center located near the main entrance in the new main patient tower
  • Addition of fourth procedure room and shell for a fifth hybrid space
  • Community/ambulatory clinic specializing in the continuum of care for cardiac success transition and peripheral artery disease
  • Potential for further programmatic expansion of cardiovascular services to include cardiothoracic surgery, which would allow for next-level world-class cardiovascular services here in Loudoun County.

The first phase is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2017. Ground breaking on the second phase is expected in the second quarter of 2017 with completion during the first quarter of 2020.  The construction process will be multi-phased so there won’t be any interruption of care for patients.

This is the latest component of the hospital’s Master Plan, an expansion of the main campus at 44045 Riverside Parkway, Lansdowne. The Plan extends through 2020 and beyond.
