Children’s Emergency Room at Inova Loudoun Hospital Receives Prestigious Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association

Leesburg, VA – July 11, 2016 – Children’s Emergency Room at Inova Loudoun Hospital has been recognized for its commitment to exceptional patient care as a recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award. The award recognizes a select group of emergency departments that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

All emergency rooms are eligible to apply for the Lantern Award, but those selected must meet the highest excellence standards. The Children’s Emergency Room at Inova Loudoun Hospital is only one of 11 hospital ERs nationwide to receive the Lantern Award this year.

“Each member of our Children’s ER team is extremely dedicated to providing excellence. They are devoted to making a difference to each patient and family member they serve. I’m so proud our staff has received this well-deserved recognition. They truly are an amazing medical team,” said April Brown, Director, Inova Loudoun Hospital Emergency Departments.

“Our team takes so much pride in the care they provide to our community’s children.  The Lantern Award validates the excellent care we are providing.  We are excited to be presented with the award in front of thousands of ER nurses from across the world at the Annual Emergency Nurses Association conference,” said Gina Harrison, Nurse Manager, Children’s Emergency Room at Inova Loudoun Hospital.

Emergency Room patients and their families seek quick access, meaningful interactions with the health care team and a coordinated plan. The Lantern Award is a visible symbol of an ER’s commitment to quality, presence of a healthy work environment and accomplishment in incorporating evidence-based practice and innovation into emergency care. Successful applications demonstrate a variety of diverse initiatives throughout the application with quantifiable outcomes, sustained improvements and innovative processes. A team of reviewers thoroughly evaluate the submissions through a blinded review process.

The Children’s Emergency Room at Inova Loudoun Hospital opened in 2006 to meet the needs of the growing population in Loudoun County. The Children’s ER treats approximately 20,000 patients annually and remain the only ER in Loudoun County dedicated to caring for children.

The emergency team will receive the award at Emergency Nurses Association in Los Angeles this September.

The Lantern Award is named in honor of Florence Nightingale, who is credited with changing nursing from an untrained job to a skilled, science-based profession. She is referred to as the “Lady of the Lamp” for her actions during the Crimean War when she worked deep into the night, bringing a lantern with her as she tended to wounded British soldiers as they slept.
