BrightMatterTM integrated solution helps treat complex neurosurgical conditions with advanced imaging, planning, navigation, and robotic visualization

FALLS CHURCH, VA – April 26, 2016 – The Inova Neuroscience Institute at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus this week announced the purchase of Synaptive Medical’s BrightMatterTM Surgical Solution, a cutting-edge technology that addresses both pre-operative and intra-operative challenges of neurosurgery. Inova is the first hospital in the Mid-Atlantic region to invest in this groundbreaking technology.

“The Inova Neuroscience and Spine Institute is a regional leader in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of complex neurological conditions involving the brain, spine and nervous system,” said James Ecklund, MD, Chairman of the Inova Neuroscience and Spine Institute. “Our acquisition of the Synaptive BrightMatter Solution is representative of our steadfast dedication to providing the most innovative care for patients with neurological disease.”

The Synaptive BrightMatter system represents a unique integration of technology addressing the core challenges of neurosurgery: strategic planning, surgical navigation and tissue visualization. The Synaptive tools allow neurosurgeons to evaluate critical brain pathways prior to surgery and use this information to plan the optimal surgical approach. In this way, lesions located deep within the brain previously thought inoperable may now be safely accessible. During the surgical procedure, the BrightMatter System combines the most advanced optical imaging with a precision robotic arm and infrared image guidance system, allowing for a union of vision and function never previously available in the neurosurgical operating room.

Allen Waziri, MD, neurosurgeon and Director of the Inova Neuro-Oncology Program, notes, “Brain tumor surgeons are very familiar with historical advances that led to improved outcomes for patients undergoing neurosurgery – MRI, the surgical microscope, intraoperative image guidance. Each of these technologies independently contributed to our ability to bring patients through otherwise potentially deadly procedures with limited risk and optimal outcomes. The Synaptive BrightMatter Solution is a quantum leap forward in assimilating these technologies and will become a standard of comparison for future technical development in neurosurgery.”

Synaptive Medical and the Inova Neuroscience Institute have developed a unique research collaboration to focus on optimizing their existing systems to develop future innovation and efficiencies. Cameron Piron, CEO of Synaptive Medical, states, “Partnerships with our customers is critical to the future of the medical industry. Knowing where the gaps are helps us to define the unmet needs of the surgical community and react quickly to develop the solution.”
