Program to have strong focus on precision medicine

FALLS CHURCH, VA – February 15, 2016 – The Inova Dwight and Martha Schar Cancer Institute recently named Joan H. Schiller, MD, the Institute’s first Deputy Director of Clinical Investigation. Widely published and internationally recognized for her work in lung cancer research, Dr. Schiller is the former division chief of Hematology /Oncology at the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center where lead UTSW’s process to become an NCI-designated cancer center and then an NCI-designated comprehensive center in 2015. She was also Deputy Director of the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center in Dallas.

While in Texas, Dr. Schiller served as an editor for the Journal of Clinical Oncology. She is a board member for the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, and the principal investigator on many national clinical trials for lung cancer, including Phase 1, 2 and 3 trials involving drugs that precisely target lung cancer mutations.

Dr. Schiller currently serves on the NCI Board of Scientific Counselors and has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications, including articles, abstracts, book chapters, books, reviews and invited manuscripts about the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. She is the founder and President of Free to Breathe, a national advocacy organization aimed at raising awareness and funding for lung cancer.

Dr. Schiller graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She completed a clinical fellowship in the Department of Human Oncology at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center.
