Inova Children’s Hospital holds Annual Mohsen Ziai Pediatric Conference

Best Selling Author Abraham Verghese Keynotes

FALLS CHURCH, VA – November 6, 2014 – Inova Children’s Hospital is hosting the 8th Annual Mohsen Ziai Pediatric Conference, November 7 – 8 at The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner. The intensive two-day program combines lectures, interactive seminars and question and answer session to allow attendees to interact with faculty in solving the problems encountered in everyday pediatric practice. Dr. Abraham Verghese, a nationally bestselling author and prominent voice in medicine, will be the keynote speaker.

The Mohsen Ziai Pediatric Conference, named after the former Pediatric Chairman at Inova Children’s Hospital, is designed for pediatricians, family practitioners, pediatric nurse practitioners, and family medicine/pediatric nurses who deliver primary care to children.

By the end of the conference participants will be able to:

  • Prescribe antibiotics for common pediatric infections using the principles of antimicrobial stewardship
  • Counsel adolescent athletes in preventing ACL injuries
  • Recognize emerging applications of genomic research to routine medical practice
  • Integrate new Internet, tablet, or smartphone applications into patient education
  • Apply current American Diabetes Association and American Academy of Pediatrics practice guidelines to the diagnosis and management of children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Discuss the controversies surrounding the diagnosis of Lyme disease and the debate over long-term sequelae.
  • Compare existing practice guidelines and current evidence for the radiographic evaluation of children following a febrile urinary tract infection.

Dr. Verghese, MD, MACP, is a professor and Vice Chair for the Theory and Practice of Medicine at the School of Medicine at Stanford University. He is a critically acclaimed, best-selling author with an international reputation for his focus on healing in the age of technology.

The namesake of the conference, Dr. Ziai, played a critical role in the growth of what is now Inova Children’s Hospital in Fairfax County. During his 17 years as Chairman of Pediatrics Inova, he produced rapid growth including the establishment of the only PICU in Northern Virginia, the opening of the Women’s and Children’s Building, the inception of the Inova Pediatric Center, the initiation of the pediatric cardiac surgery program, and the establishment of a pediatric residency program. He passed away March 27, 2013.
