Statement on Inova Health System’s Flu Season Visitation Policy

(October 1, 2009) – The H1N1 virus has emerged as a significant threat internationally and in the Washington, DC, area. Specific populations – including infants, children, pregnant women and individuals with compromised immune systems – have been found to be at highest risk. At Inova Health System, patient safety is our number-one priority, so to limit possible H1N1 exposure to our patients, we have amended our visitation policy during the flu season.

Under the amended policy, visiting hours will be limited to two blocks of time each day (11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m.), the number of visitors will be limited to two, and only visitors aged 18 and above will be permitted. Additional limitations will be put in place in critical-care, oncology, and women’s and children’s units.

Though the policy applies to all Inova facilities, exceptions to accommodate family needs will be made at the discretion of the patient’s physician and the Patient Care Director. As the leading healthcare provider in Northern Virginia, Inova is obligated to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone under our care. The full cooperation of families and visitors will help us maintain the safety and well-being of our patients, staff and physicians.
