Statement of Inova Health System Regarding the Initial FTC Merger Challenge

(May 9, 2008) – Though we are disappointed, the FTC’s challenge is not the final word on the proposed merger. In the true spirit of not-for-profit hospitals, Prince William Health System intends to vigorously pursue its decision to join Inova Health System to bring the people of Prince William County the high-quality, sophisticated and accessible healthcare services they deserve.

This merger will provide substantial benefits to the Prince William community:
Major investment of more than $200 million in and expansion of essential and higher-level, sophisticated healthcare services

  • Significant quality-of-care improvements as a result of the knowledge, resources and practices that Inova will bring to Prince William Health System
  • Better access to high-quality, sophisticated services closer to home, supported by a seamlessly connected system of nationally recognized, award-winning medical care services
  • The ability to attract more doctors and nurses to the County
  • Strengthening of the County’s overall healthcare, through new and enhanced community health and wellness programs, and not-for-profit commitment to the uninsured, underinsured and every citizen, regardless of their ability to pay

Understanding the real consumer benefits of not-for-profit hospitals, as well as Prince William Health System’s desire to remain a not-for-profit, are principles the FTC seems to have missed completely.

Inova supports Prince William Health System in moving forward to bring this merger to successful conclusion.

Inova Health System is a not-for-profit health care system based in Northern Virginia
that consists of hospitals and other health services, including emergency and urgent care centers, home care, nursing homes, mental health and blood donor services, and wellness classes. Governed by a voluntary board of community members, Inova’s mission is to improve the health of the diverse community it serves through excellence in patient care, education and research. Inova provides a healthy environment for its patients, families, visitors, staff and physicians by prohibiting tobacco use on its campuses.
