COVID-19 Vaccine: What you need to know

As of Sept. 12, the latest FDA guidance limits COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to the following groups:

  • Adults aged 65 and older
  • Adults and children with underlying health conditions that increase the risk of severe illness from COVID-19 (e.g., asthma, obesity, history of smoking)

The Virginia Department of Health (VDOH) announced that 2025-26 COVID-19 vaccines are available without a prescription for individuals 65 years of age and up, and anyone 18-64 years of age with at least one underlying condition.

What you need to know:

  • Inova Primary Care clinics are preparing to administer vaccines directly for eligible patients who meet FDA criteria only.
  • We recommend checking with your local pharmacy to check availability.
  • You should check directly with your insurance provider to confirm coverage. For individuals over 65, Medicare coverage may vary.

Individuals under 65 without underlying conditions: As of now, there is no universal guidance for individuals under 65 without underlying conditions.  If you do not meet the criteria listed above, please discuss with your provider to explore your available vaccination options.

We’re actively monitoring the FDA and CDC guidance, and we will update this message as the guidelines evolve. We appreciate your patience as we work to ensure safe and efficient access to COVID-19 vaccination.
