Why subspecialized cancer care matters
John Deeken, MD, is president of the Inova Schar Cancer and Medical Director for the Inova Schar Head and Neck Cancer Program. He is board-certified in medical oncology and specializes in head and neck cancers.
When you or someone you love is diagnosed with cancer, one of the most important decisions you face is choosing where to receive care. Recent research underscores what many in the field already know: patients do better when their doctors are specialists in their specific type of cancer.
A new study in JAMA Oncology found that while subspecialization in cancer care is growing, the majority of patients in the United States are still treated by generalists. In fact, only 18% of cancer patients nationwide are cared for by subspecialists, up from 9% in 2008. Even though 34% of oncologists now focus on a single type of cancer, most patients still do not have consistent access to that level of expertise.
Why does this matter? Because outcomes, including survival, are improved when patients are treated by doctors who dedicate their practice to a particular cancer type. Specialists not only stay on the cutting edge of research and treatment, but they also bring a depth of experience that can make a critical difference.
The Inova difference
At Inova Schar Cancer, subspecialization is our model. From breast and lung cancers to gastrointestinal tumors, blood cancers and rare cancer types, our medical oncologists, hematologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists are specialized in specific cancers. They deploy that knowledge and expertise to provide the best care.
This approach means:
- Your physician sees and treats patients just like you every day
- You benefit from the latest research, clinical trials and targeted therapies tailored to your diagnosis
- Care is fully integrated, with your team working seamlessly across specialties to deliver comprehensive treatment
Our dedication to subspecialization is one of the key reasons why Inova Schar Cancer has grown to become the largest clinical cancer program in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area – and why patients trust us with their care.
Looking ahead
While the national trend is moving toward subspecialization, at Inova, we have already made it our standard. Because when it comes to cancer, expertise matters. And every patient deserves a team that specializes in their future.
