Launched in 2011, The Joint Commission’s palliative care certification standards are built on The National Consensus Project’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care and the National Quality Forum’s National Framework and Preferred Practices for Palliative and Hospice Quality Care. Diet Reduces Heart Disease
March 19th, 2013
#1 killer of Americans targeted by healthy eating
FALLS CHURCH, VA – March is National Nutrition Month. Eating right not only improves your overall health, it also reduces risk for heart disease – the leading cause of death for both men and women. Nationally, 600,000 people die of heart disease annually—accounting for 1 in every 4 deaths. According to physicians, modifying our diet is a critical factor in avoiding heart disease.
“Of the seven major risk factors for developing heart disease, five of them are modifiable with good nutrition,” according to Dr. Dhaval R. Patel, Cardiologist at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. “Aside from smoking cessation and regular exercise, a healthy diet promotes weight loss, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and helps control blood sugar levels.”
Choosing healthy meal and snack options, such as plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, low sodium/low saturated fat and high fiber foods are a critical step in preventing high blood cholesterol. Alternatives to red and processed meats include fish, nuts, legumes and fiber-rich whole grains.
“Eating out and eating healthy are not mutually exclusive,” according to Dr. Patel. “Take breakfast – order a glass of juice, whole grain bagel with low-fat cream cheese or a hot cereal such as oatmeal or grits. Add a side of fruit and you have a tasty, easy-to-prepare heart-healthy start to your day.”

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Named One of the Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals
March 5th, 2013
FAIRFAX, VA – Inova Fair Oaks Hospital has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Truven Health Analytics formerly the healthcare business of Thomson Reuters. Truven Health Analytics is a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.
The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® study evaluates performance in 10 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia. The study is celebrating its 20th year, and has been conducted annually since 1993.
“We are honored to be named a Truven Health 100 Top Hospital. This distinction is a direct reflection of our continuous efforts to strengthen our hospital and the patient care we provide across all disciplines and, in doing so, better serve our community with affordable, high-quality healthcare,” said John Fitzgerald, CEO of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital.
To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers evaluated 2,922 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information – Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor.
The winning hospitals were announced in the February 25 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine.
“The winners of the 100 Top Hospitals award have driven the national benchmarks higher every year for 20 years. This year’s winners have brought even higher value to their local communities – better quality, higher efficiency and high patient perceptions of care, while confronting the challenges of massive industry-wide transformation to implement healthcare reform,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president at Truven Health Analytics. “The key to success in a tumultuous environment is visionary leadership that develops and maintains a hospital-wide culture of excellence that cuts across everything, from patient care to housekeeping to administration, and the refusal to rest on laurels when it comes to adopting new technologies and techniques. I congratulate this year’s winners for their persistent drive for excellence.”

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Recognized for Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology
February 15th, 2013
FAIRFAX, VA – Inova Fair Oaks Hospital has been named a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the AAGL, the leading association promoting minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. The hospital is one of the first facilities in the world to be awarded the COEMIG designation.
Center of excellence certification means that both the hospital and surgeons have undergone a critical review process and met standards developed by the AAGL and Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) to ensure the efficacy, safety and efficiency of their minimally invasive gynecology program. To earn the designation, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital provided information on all aspects of its minimally invasive gynecology program and processes, including data on its surgical outcomes.
“Earning the center of excellence designation signifies our ability to consistently deliver the safest, highest-quality care to minimally invasive gynecologic surgery patients,” said Dr. Ray Wertheim, Co-Director, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Center of Excellence at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. “The COEMIG program fosters quality improvement in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, and participation has focused our team on exceeding clinical benchmarks and guidelines. But most importantly, our commitment to excellence improves the health and well-being of our patients.”
Inova Fair Oaks Hospital has long been a leader in the field of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, an advanced alternative to traditional open surgery. In 2012, the highly skilled medical team performed 97.6 percent of gynecologic procedures using a minimally invasive approach, compared to the nationwide rate of 25 to 32 percent, according to Dr. Leonard Rosen, Co-Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Center of Excellence and Chairman of the Robotics Committee at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. “There’s not another hospital in the nation that can boast those statistics,” adds Rosen. The center’s wide array of minimally invasive procedures includes treatment for uterine fibroids, stress urinary incontinence, abnormal bleeding, pelvic floor disorders, gynecologic cancer, endometriosis and uterine prolapse.
“The advantage to the community is that women now have an opportunity to have the best possible care with a less invasive procedure, which means that they will recover faster, have less pain and the results are more aesthetically pleasing,” says Lynne Kennedy, PhD, RN, Program Coordinator of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. “The majority of patients go home within four hours of surgery and can return to their normal lives in two weeks or less.” SRC is an international organization committed to advancing the safety, efficacy and efficiency of surgical care worldwide and has developed center of excellence programs and health information technologies that promote measurable improvements in quality and outcomes for surgeons, facilities and patients. The AAGL is an internationally recognized authority in minimally invasive gynecology, with over 5,500 members in 95 countries.
