Inova Life with Cancer’s® Lung Cancer Support Group Named Leading Program in the Nation

FALLS CHURCH, VA – January 18, 2016 – Inova announced today that The Lung Cancer Alliance has recognized the lung cancer support group at the Inova Life with Cancer Center as the leading lung cancer support group in the country. Inova has long understood that treating cancer is about more than just treating the disease. Cancer affects the whole person, as well as the people they love. Inova’s lung cancer support group has been active for more than a decade, helping and guiding patients and their caregivers through the cancer journey.

Life with Cancer serves patients and their loved ones at all Inova hospitals/campuses and at the Life with Cancer Family Center in Fairfax. The Life with Cancer programs are provided at no cost to all people, regardless of whether they are receiving treatment at an Inova facility. Programs include educational seminars and workshops, support groups, individual and family counseling, wellness and exercise programs, and nursing education and navigation to provide assistance in times of need, as well as information about specific cancers. These programs are made possible in large part by the generosity of the community in the form of philanthropic gifts.

“The goal of Life with Cancer is to support and enhance the quality of life for individuals facing cancer by offering information, education and support,” said Carrie Friedman, Manager, Oncology Navigation and Counseling. “And while we are honored to receive this award, we believe it truly belongs to our wonderful participants, who share their stories, offer each other hope and support, and work together in the fight against lung cancer.”
The Lung Cancer Alliance is a national organization based in Washington, D.C. It provides lung cancer support for patients and caregivers and education about early detection and screening. In addition, the organization advocates for increased funding for lung cancer research. The Lung Cancer Alliance chooses its annual winner based on feedback from participants, an in-person observation from an LCA representative, and the robust, consistent attendance of group members.
