Dr. Alessandro Ghidini Awarded the Julia Johns Award of Distinction

Alexandria, VA – Wednesday, June10, 2015 – Inova Alexandria Hospital held the twenty-third annual 1872 Society reception on Tuesday, June 2, 2015. This event provides an opportunity for the Inova Alexandria Hospital Foundation to thank its generous donors for their support over the past year, while also honoring an individual with the Julia Johns Award of Distinction.  This special award was established to recognize and honor an individual who has shown the same spirit as the hospital’s founder.

The 1872 Society is named in honor of the generous community members who founded Alexandria Hospital in December of 1872. The founder, Julia Johns, stated that a group of concerned citizens met to form a “society to establish and control a hospital for the sick.” The 1872 Society was formed to encourage the annual support that is critical to the future of Inova Alexandria Hospital.

This year’s recipient of the Julia Johns Award of Distinction was Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician and Medical Genetics Specialist, Dr. Alessandro Ghidini, FACOG.  Dr. Ghidini is the Executive Director of the Inova Brock Family Antenatal Diagnostic Center at Inova Alexandria Hospital.  Dr. Ghidini joined the medical staff of Inova Alexandria Hospital in 2004 and maintains an academic appointment as Clinical Professor at Georgetown University.   He has a special interest in prenatal diagnosis of fetal anomalies and has co-authored a leading textbook on the topic, along with publishing nearly 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Ghidini serves on numerous committees at Inova Alexandria Hospital, including Chair of the OB Quality Assurance Committee, and is a valued trustee of the Inova Alexandria Hospital Foundation Board.  “We are honored to present this prestigious award to Dr. Ghidini and are fortunate to have a physician of his caliber on staff to care for women and families in our community,” shared Susan Carroll, CEO, Inova Alexandria Hospital.  This year’s award presentation was particularly special, as members of grateful families presented him the Julia Johns Award of Distinction.
