Inova Marks an Important Building Phase for the Future of Women’s and Children’s Health

Beam Signing for Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital

FALLS CHURCH, VA – March 13, 2014 – Yesterday, Inova Health System senior leaders, elected officials, government representatives, along with Inova physicians and nurses, former Inova Children’s Hospital patients, and generous donors gathered to leave their mark at a Beam Signing Ceremony for the $400 million building that will house Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital.  In lieu of signing an actual beam, the written messages were penned on a wall that will on display in the new building.  The 650,000-square-foot building is the second phase of the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus expansion project.

“This phase of the process in many ways is the most exciting.  You can see the progress that has been made, but the vision of what is to come is still also on the horizon. While the design, construction and technology involved with this new building are important, what matters most are the women and children we will serve and the professionals who will serve them,” shared Knox Singleton, CEO of Inova Health System.

Inova Women’s Hospital will include 192 private patient rooms; a dedicated women’s surgery center with 8 operating rooms; 33 labor delivery and recovery suites and six cesarean-section operation rooms; a high-risk perinatal unit; an expanded antenatal testing center; lactation center; and family centered maternity suites.

Inova Children’s Hospital will include 116 private pediatric patient rooms, an expanded 108-bassinette level IIIC neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric oncology unit, Northern Virginia’s only pediatric intensive care unit, and a child-life play area. It will have a separate child-friendly entrance and a number of features built specifically for children.

The first phase of the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus expansion project is the 11 story medical/surgical South Patient Tower, which will open in January 2013. The project was designed by Wilmot Sanz Inc., an award-winning architecture and planning firm. After a competitive contractor-selection process, Clark Construction — a nationally recognized healthcare builder — has been awarded the contract for construction of Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital.
