Inova Alexandria Hospital Announces Teh-chang Shih Memorial Fund

The largest scholarship for nursing and medical technician staff in Hospital’s history

Alexandria VA – February 25, 2014 – Inova Alexandria Hospital is pleased to announce the establishment of the Teh-chang Shih Memorial Fund.  This fund was created by the family of Dr. Shih in his memory and will provide annual scholarship awards to nursing and medical technician staff at Inova Alexandria Hospital.  The scholarships will enable nurses to attend medical conferences to hone their skills and stay on top of the most up-to-date techniques in the medical field.  This fund will also be a vehicle for technicians to obtain a higher level of education and further their medical career at Inova.

This is the largest endowed fund created at Inova Alexandria Hospital that directly benefits the nursing and medical technician staff.

Dr. Shih served the Alexandria community for over thirty years as a staff internist for the hospital from 1970 until 2002.  Originally from China, Dr. Shih immigrated to Canada and completed his medical education.  The Alexandria community was fortunate that he and his wife, Catherine settled here in the late 1960’s.  He dedicated his entire career to the care of the community’s indigent population and volunteered his time one day a week at the Casey Clinic.

In his role as a hospitalist, Dr. Shih was instrumental in starting one of the first Code Blue Teams in the country.  Board certified in internal medicine, Endocrinology and Geriatrics, Dr. Shih was an enormous asset to Inova Alexandria Hospital and the community.  “Dr. Shih had the respect of his colleagues and entire staff.  We are happy to see his legacy carry on within the hospital with the establishment of this scholarship.” said Christine Candio, CEO, Inova Alexandria Hospital.

A prominent meeting space and classroom within the Hospital has been named in his honor.  Scholarships will be given during nursing week every May.
