Inova’s Operational and Clinical Reputation Expands Globally

Falls Church, VA – January 27, 2014 – While millions of residents in the Washington, D.C. area benefit from Inova’s leading edge healthcare resources, hundreds of patients from around the world come to Inova to access the world-renowned services and physicians Inova offers.

Since 2009, nearly 1,600 patients have traveled from international locations to Inova for personalized and specialized care. Dr. Sandeep Khandhar, a thoracic surgeon and Director of Inova’s Thoracic Oncology Program, is one of the reasons overseas patients come to Inova.

Dr. Khandhar is one of a small number of thoracic surgeons worldwide who specializes in minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer patients.

Unfortunately, lung cancer is one of the leading cancers throughout the world. Therefore, the international reputation of Dr. Khandhar and Inova’s clinical resources make the program a viable and attractive option for overseas patients.

This week, Dr. Khandhar and Inova colleagues Knox Singleton (Chief Executive Officer) and James Santry (Senior Vice President of Managed Care) will have the attention of global healthcare leaders when they participate in a panel discussion at the Healthcare Innovation Summit in Dubai.

“Some of the most creative and innovative leaders in healthcare will be attending the Summit, so we are honored to be selected to share Inova’s accomplishments with our international peers,” said Singleton. “It validates the outstanding work Inova’s health professionals and staff have achieved to improve the future of health.”

The three Inova panelists will share their experiences and insights on how the health system is bridging the gap between operational and clinical excellence as it develops new models of care delivery. Dr. Khandhar’s program provides one example of how Inova is leading the future of health on the international scene through innovative new care models.

“Efficient, nimble and effective are some of the traits the Thoracic Oncology Program and Inova share in common,” said Khandhar. “These synergies have resulted in decades of leadership regionally, and now is increasingly garnering international prominence. Our invitation to the international stage in Dubai is a tribute to Inova’s longstanding strategic vision and innovation.”

The culturally diverse Washington, D.C., region has given Inova health professionals unique experience by caring for patients representing more than 150 ethnic cultures. This experience is valuable to international patients as Inova has developed one of the largest and most diverse disease databases in the world, especially in cancer. These databases provide Inova health professionals a wealth of information to assist with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases for local and international patients.
