Inova Fairfax Hospital Among Busiest Transplant Centers in the Nation

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (March 2013) – The Inova Transplant Center at Inova Fairfax Hospital was recently ranked among the top 50 most active kidney transplant centers in the country. Inova was the only hospital in the Washington, D.C. region to be ranked on the list.

The data, provided by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, was published by Nephrology News & Issues and includes only kidney and kidney/pancreas transplants.

“This recognition is a reflection of the tremendous work everyone has put into the transplant program here at Inova,” says Patrick Christiansen,” CEO of Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. “It is our goal not only to maintain this progress amidst an ever-evolving healthcare market, but to expand our living donor program in an effort to continually provide our patients and the community with the highest quality of service.”

Inova’s patient volume for kidney transplants has steadily grown since its transplant program was created in 1992. With 111 total transplant cases in 2012, this marks the second consecutive year that Inova has completed more than 100 transplants.

“Just within the last few years, we have taken on a growing number of very complicated cases. And I am proud to say that we continue to see exceptional outcomes,” says Dr. Ravinder Wali, medical director of Inova’s Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program. “The growing numbers of at-risk patients we see, as well as overall cases, is a sign that our talented surgeons and staff stand among the nation’s best.”

As a subset of the Inova Transplant Center, the Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital serves both pediatric and adult patients with end-stage diseases. It assists them in finding the best option for a normal and healthy life free from dialysis and related complications.
