Stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked or bursts. Without oxygen, that part of the brain starts to die, and can cause sudden numbness or weakness, confusion, dizziness or a sudden severe headache. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. On average, someone in the U.S. has a stroke every 40 seconds.
