Using Cutting-Edge Research To Improve Patient Care
Annandale, VA – (October 30, 2008) —Inova Fairfax Hospital will hold an open house Thursday, November 6th, for its new Biomechanical Laboratory. This lab will provide cutting-edge orthopedic research to advance treatment for people with complex bone and joint problems. The biomechanical lab is the only lab of its kind in Northern Virginia.

Researchers will use the lab to analyze bone and joint replacement strength to better understand the limitations of bones and implants. This will give physicians more insight as they choose joint replacement options for their patients.
Three dimensional imaging, state-of-the-art software and equipment will expose bones to various types of strains and pressures. The researchers will offer suggestions to physicians and assist them in solving orthopedic issues.
“We’re excited to have this new lab,” said Jihui Li, director, biomechanical lab, Inova Fairfax Hospital. “We’re able to look at bones and solve some of our patients problems in a way that no other local institution can.”
According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons more than one million Americans have a joint replacement surgery each year.

My name is Alisha Salomon and I am a freshman at Frostburg State University. I am from Springfield, VA and am majoring in exercise and sports science. I am starting to get very interested in biomechanics. I am still new to it, but keep doing more research day by day.
I was wondering if you had a few minutes if you could explain to me a little of what you and your coworkers do, schooling, and job opportunities, and if you had time for me to possibly shadow this summer while I am home.

I need a total knee replacement. It is very complicated. The knee was dislocated accidentally by a chiropractor. It is partially locked in place and there are stress lines going down from the joint. I may have Dr. Moazzam from Kaiser. Can she have access to the virtual surgery and software that would help insure that the replacement is a success. I am really worried about this replacement. Right now there is a lot of space on one side of the knee and bone into bone on the other side. I hope that you can help me. I am afraid.
