Inova Fairfax Hospital Honored For Outstanding Cancer Treatment

American College of Surgeons Recognizes Hospital for Delivering High Quality Cancer Care

Falls Church, VA – (July 28, 2008) – Inova Fairfax Hospital has been named a recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Achievement Award by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). Only 66 cancer programs throughout the nation were bestowed this award, two in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“Being presented this outstanding achievement award acknowledges our commitment to excellence and the high quality work of our staff and physicians,” said Kirsten Edmiston, MD, Inova Fairfax Hospital Cancer Center director.
More than 450 programs were evaluated by the CoC for this award. The programs were given an on-site review of many areas including the delivery of care, clinical services, community outreach, and leadership in setting the standard for cancer programs.

“Part of providing quality cancer care is looking at the full scope of options available to the patient, including education, research, outreach and the most current data regarding cancer treatment,” said Nicholas Robert, MD, Inova Fairfax Hospital cancer committee chairman. “We are proud that the CoC determined that our cancer program is an outstanding performer.”

A program recognized by CoC for this award means that patients undergoing treatment will have access to:
State-of-the art services and equipment

  • A multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
  • Clinical trial and treatment options
  • Cancer-related information, education and support
  • A cancer registry and follow-up
  • On-going monitoring
  • Care close to home

The CoC is comprised of a group of nationally-recognized cancer organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients. The Outstanding Achievement Award was established in 2004 as a way to recognize cancer programs that provide stellar care to their patients.
