The medical dosimetry team at Inova Schar Cancer has achieved a historic milestone at the 2025 American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD) International Planning Competition, a globally recognized event showcasing cutting-edge treatment planning expertise. Competing against 194 submissions – 103 from the United States and 91 from international participants – Inova’s team secured top honors in both proton and photon therapy categories.
Alex Goughenour and Grayden MacLennan earned top-five rankings in the proton therapy category, demonstrating exceptional precision in advanced treatment planning. Amanuel Negussie also secured a top-five placement in the photon therapy category, leveraging the innovative RayStation planning software. Additionally, Erin Murdoch and Hieu Tran collaborated with AAMD to develop the competition’s benchmark plan, underscoring their leadership and expertise in the field.
Erin Murdoch also represented Inova Schar Cancer at the national level as the lead and presenter for this study during the 50th anniversary of the AAMD, further highlighting the team’s impact and visibility on a prestigious platform.
Several of Inova’s team members have placed well in past years’ competitions, but this is the first time the team has achieved three top-five placements in the same year – a rare accomplishment for any institution. This outstanding performance highlights Inova Schar Cancer’s commitment to pioneering cancer care through innovative, patient-centered treatment planning.
“We are incredibly proud of Alex, Grayden, Amanuel, Erin and Hieu for their remarkable achievements,” said James Fan, Director of Medical Physics at Inova Schar Cancer. “Their success reflects the dedication and expertise of our team in advancing the future of cancer care.”
Join us in congratulating the Inova Schar Cancer dosimetry team for their exceptional contributions and for elevating our institution’s reputation on the global stage.
