Measles Outbreak: What you need to know

With recent measles outbreaks across the country, Inova remains committed to protecting the health and safety of our community. Measles is a highly contagious illness that spreads through the air and can cause serious illness, especially in young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The best way to protect yourself and others is by getting vaccinated against measles.

How to know if you’re protected?

You are immune if you were:

  • Born before 1957 OR
  • Have received measles vaccination according to CDC guidelines OR
  • Have an antibody test confirming immunity to measles

If you’re unsure of your immune status, please contact your healthcare provider about the next steps.

What to do if you’re exposed or have symptoms?

If you’ve been exposed or have symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider right away.

Symptoms of measles typically appear 7-14 days after exposure and include:

  • High fever
  • Cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes
  • Small white spots inside cheeks
  • A skin rash that spreads

Thank you for taking this important step to protect yourself and our community. For more details on measles and immunity, visit the CDC website
