Inova marks major milestone in Eastern Region expansion with topping out of Alexandria and Franconia-Springfield Campuses

Fairfax, VA — Inova is celebrating a major milestone this week with two “topping out” ceremonies for the new Inova Alexandria and Inova Franconia-Springfield hospital campuses. These events mark the completion of the structural framework for both state-of-the-art facilities, bringing Inova one step closer to simultaneously opening two hospital complexes that will transform healthcare access and the patient experience across Northern Virginia.

These topping out ceremonies follow the groundbreakings for the two hospitals in 2024, a historic step in replacing the current Inova Alexandria Hospital. Since then, construction has progressed rapidly and remains on track for completion in 2028 across two campuses – together totaling more than 1.4 million square feet. With the structural framework complete, focus will now shift inside as the new hospitals take shape as modern, patient-centered facilities designed to meet the healthcare needs of the community for decades to come.

“What began with two groundbreakings on the same day has now grown into a once‑in‑a‑generation transformation of healthcare delivery,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, FACS, President and CEO of Inova. “From their earliest days, these facilities were designed not just as hospitals, but as a reimagining of how we deliver Inova’s world-class care in way that is innovative, accessible, and built around the evolving needs of our patients and communities.”

New facilities in the Eastern Region

The Inova Alexandria Campus, located at WestEnd, site of the former Landmark Mall, will expand upon the services currently offered and will include:

The Inova Franconia-Springfield Campus includes the existing Healthplex and will feature:

“This investment is about more than new buildings — it is about a long‑standing commitment to this community,” said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey C. McKay. “Inova is our trusted health partner, and this new campus builds on that legacy by expanding access to high-quality, patient‑centered care that will serve Franconia-Springfield residents for generations to come..”

“Inova has been part of Alexandria’s story for more than 150 years, caring for generations of individuals and families and standing alongside our community through times of growth and change,” said City of Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins. “This exciting new campus at WestEnd will expand access and elevate the healthcare experience for city residents now and into the future.”

Design & Construction Partners

Both campuses were designed by Ballinger and Ennead Architects and are being constructed by Clark Construction (Alexandria Campus) and DPR Construction (Franconia-Springfield Campus), with full completion expected in 2028.

“For Clark Construction, seeing the Alexandria Campus reach its structural height is a testament to the hard work and dedication of every team member,” said Ellen Quigley, a vice president with Clark Construction, which is overseeing more than 1,000 craft workers contributing to the project. “We are honored to work alongside Inova to deliver a facility that will serve the community for generations, blending innovation, functionality, and patient-centered design.”

“At the Inova Franconia-Springfield campus, this milestone reflects how Inova’s ‘One Hospital, Two Sites’ vision is being realized through deep collaboration with Inova, the design team, and trade partners,” said Jason Maxwell, DPR Project Executive. “For DPR, that has meant leading with exceptional quality, rigorous planning, and the proven expertise of our self-perform teams to help deliver a highly technical healthcare environment. We’re proud to be part of a project that will serve the patients, families, and caregivers at the heart of this community while expanding access to care across the region for years to come.”

Generous philanthropic support continues to play a vital role in bringing Inova’s projects to life – fueling innovation, enhancing facilities, and expanding access to patient-centered care across Northern Virginia. Members of the community who want to leave a lasting mark on these new hospitals can purchase a commemorative paver  through Inova’s “Paving the Way Together” program here.
